1:30-2:30 The Intersection of Science and the Courtroom
Accreditation, certifications, and consensus standards provide laboratories and scientists with the minimum requirements for performing testing to be used in criminal and civil litigation. We will explore what these metrics actually measure, what their significance is, and the importance of disclosures. Understanding these concepts can help lawyers better question scientific experts when testing is used in a case, discover what factors can affect the reliability of the information and evidence presented, and look past the resume to assess the underlying qualifications of the expert. In addition, we will explore how forensic science has changed since the National Academy of Science released its report over a decade ago.

3:45-4:45 (Ethics/Professionalism) Ethics, Professionalism and My Cousin Vinny
Who could have guessed that the passionate defense of two “yutes” could provide a treasure trove of examples of professionalism, ethics and the less-than-perfect compliance with rules for the admission of a lawyer. Brian Pori and Margaret Katze will be your modern day Siskel and Ebert, taking you on a mad cap journey to remind you all about rules you should never forget.
