Problem Solving Courts New Mexico Problem-Solving Courts use the collaborative treatment-based Drug Court model to work with repeat offenders whose criminal activity is driven by underlying substance abuse or mental illness. As alternatives to incarceration, these programs focus on the successful rehabilitation of participants through early, continuous, and intense judicial oversight, treatment, mandatory periodic drug testing, and use of appropriate sanctions, incentives, and other community-based rehabilitation services.

Free Arbitration The State Bar of New Mexico Fee Arbitration program provides clients and attorneys with an out-of-court method of resolving fee disputes that is expeditious, confidential, inexpensive, and impartial. This voluntary program can help avoid difficult, lengthy, and often expensive lawsuits. Arbitration can be requested by either the client or attorney. The State Bar offers this fee arbitration program as a free service to the public and to the attorney.

Probono.netCurrently the Bridge to Justice Referral Program receives over 10,000 calls annually requesting referrals to attorneys. The referral program assists in finding appropriate attorneys for participants. The participant is charged a $30 fee and receives an up-to 30-minute consultation with a referral panel attorney. The fee goes to support the program. Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless To provide caring and comprehensive health and integrated supportive services, linking people experiencing homelessness to individual and collective solutions.

Albuquerque Rescue Mission (Recently became SteelBridge). SteelBridge is a faith based organization that includes residential recovery programs for men and women, homeless shelters for men as well as for women and children. The New Life Recovery Program provides One-on-one and group counseling sessions with counselors, addiction recovery and family restoration curricula. The Learning Center offers one-on-one tutoring and remedial education and GED preparation, computer skills training, vocational training and job preparation, participation in the daily tasks of running Steelbridge facility and programs, which teach responsibility, accountability, and joy of giving back.

New Mexico Rehabilitation Center offers a wide range of rehabilitation services, including physical and occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, social services, psychological services and a chemical dependency program.

NM Coalition to End Homelessness The Coalition carries out is mission through advocacy, trainings, and coordinated grant-writing and fundraising. We also maintain a database that tracks progress in ending homelessness, and we operate a new coordinated assessment system that helps people experiencing homelessness quickly connect to housing.

NM Eviction Prevention Services New Mexico uses grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, to help families facing eviction. While the types of resources offered will vary by town and county, it can include emergency one time rent help, legal aid, and counseling. The currently homeless in New Mexico may also benefit from government programs, including transitional housing and assistance with paying the security deposit on a new home or residence.

Oxford House is a concept in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. In its simplest form, an Oxford House describes a democratically run, self-supporting and drug free home.

Immigrants

Enlace Comunitario is a social justice organization led by Latina immigrants whose mission is to eliminate domestic violence in the Latino immigrant community and promote healthy families in Central New Mexico through: comprehensive domestic violence intervention services in Spanish, preventative community education, policy advocacy and leadership development. 

New Mexico Immigrant Law Center The NMILC provides free and low-cost immigration information and legal assistance to low-income families. The agency helps immigrants keep their families together, gain protection from persecution and domestic violence, attain permanent residency and work authorization and become U.S. citizens. The NMILC builds stable families and increases opportunities for economic security, allowing New Mexico’s immigrants to contribute to their communities for generations to come. 

Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) LEAD is a public safety program in which law enforcement officers redirect persons involved in non-violent low level crimes, such as shoplifting, minor theft, and/or possession, to community-based services instead of jail and prosecution. LEAD participants begin working immediately with case managers to access harm reduction, treatment, and/or social services.

Low Income Services

Catholic Charities of Southern New Mexico is a 501(c) 3 organization that provides social, legal, and economic assistance to people in need regardless of faith, belief, ethnicity or cultural background. 

Law Access provides statewide legal services to New Mexico households with income of 200 percent or less of federal poverty guidelines.

Senior Citizens Law Office SCLO provides free legal services to residents of Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance and Valencia counties who are 60 years of age or older.

Legal Resources for the Elderly LREP is a free, statewide legal helpline and referral service for New Mexico residents age 55 and older. 

Women and Girls

Crossroads for Women Crossroads for Women is not just counseling, not just rehabilitation, not just housing, and not just support, but a combined and individualized program to help women and their families break that cycle.Maya’s Placeis a structured nine to twelve month program at a fifteen bed multi-lease apartment living site for women upon release from incarceration. Women participate in on-site therapeutic programming addressing substance addictions and mental illness, as well as, life skills education, group therapy, parenting, vocational training, holistic health services and community activities.

My Destiny N.M. is an organization designed to help women who are leaving prison. A transitional home will be opening on March 3rd. The goal is to help woman build a community of support and a sense of self-worth. It also provides life skills training.

New Mexico Women’s Justice Project Improving the lives of women and girls in the criminal and juvenile justice systems by addressing the underlying issues of poverty, addiction, trauma and abuse that often lead to incarceration.

Southwest Women’s Law Center is a nonprofit policy and advocacy law center that focuses on advancing opportunities for women and girls in New Mexico by eliminating gender bias and discrimination, and lifting women and their families out of poverty by ensuring: access to quality affordable healthcare; access to equal pay; access to economic security for survivors of domestic violence; equal access to sports programs for middle and high school girls; and access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare and information.

Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families Esperanza inspires our community to engage in a collective and comprehensive commitment to eradicate violence by offering: Crisis Intervention, Emergency Shelter, Counseling, On Call Advocacy Program, Life Skills Education, Court Advocacy, Community Outreach and Education, and Coordinated Community Response Council.
